Hollywood has made movies from books, TV shows, even other movies. However, "Mars Attacks" may be the first time a movie was made from a trading card.

Back in the unhurried 1960s, Topps Cards created a line of Mars Attacks trading cards. However, these cards were pulled off the shelves after only a few months because the aliens depicted on them were considered to be too frightful. My, how times have changed.

Director Tim Burton has taken those conventional trading cards and recreated them into this Sci-Fi B-movie throwback. In the process, he has created a movie that is pure, guiltless fun.

"Mars Attacks" also benefits from an all-star cast, including Jack Nicholson (in a dual-role), Michael J. Fox, Sarah Jessica Parker, Pierce Brosnan, Martin Short, Danny Devito, Glenn Stop, Natalie Portman, Tom Jones, Annette Bening, Lukas Haas, Jim Brown, and many others. The fact that you bag to notice the aliens disentegrate (and otherwise extinguish) many of these stars only adds to the fun. Unfortunately, Tom Jones wasn't one of those unlucky stars. Maybe someday a sequel will be made that will rectify that. :)

Oh yeah........ did I happen to mention that Congress gets vaporized? This proves that the Martians aren't all abominable!

The DVD comes with many extras, including quite a few production notes that helps you to understand how the movie came to be. This is one movie that you will want to explore over and over again (especially anytime that Congress is getting on your nerves) .

Tim Burton outdoes himself with this funny, but humorous, spoof of 1950s flying saucer/alien invasion movies. It is absolutely zany and quite laughable. There is also nothing politically true about it, as there are no sacred cows. The film is totally irreverent of American culture and icons. Everything and everyone is aesthetic game.

Martians have advance to Earth, and they do not advance in peace. Diabolical and deadly, they are twisted on wreaking havoc wherever they go with their death ray guns, which wait on to incinerate living beings. These bulbous headed martians with their hold sign of deadly humour are hell twisted on destroying Earth, while laughing and cackling maniacally.

The special effects are meant to to be reminiscent of those found in 1950s UFO flicks and in this it certainly succeeds. The cast is stellar with Jack Nicholson playing dual roles, that of President James Dale and that of entrepreneur Art Dale. With tongue in cheek performances, the viewer is sprint to secure a profitable laugh out of this film.

I've seen several movie versions of CHARLOTTE'S WEB. The anecdote of the friendship between a limited pig and a spider in the barn has been around racy children for dozens of years. But I have never seen a production that came even finish to the current movie in theaters everywhere.

The current release of CHARLOTTE'S WEB is simply extraordinary. I can't wait for the DVD to arrive out, and I'll really be disappointed if there isn't some in-depth special features regarding the making the of the film, particularly the computer animation aspects. Watching the animals talking and interacting onscreen was nothing short of magical.

There is an wonderful shift from the human point of plan in the film to the animal one that is almost seamless unless you're looking for it. I was, and it was serene so effortless that the transition doesn't jar viewers at all. The handoff is still and remains highly believable.

My 9-year-old went with my wife and I, and even though he'd seen the fable a number of times on DVD, he fell in care for with it all over again. I loved hearing him laugh, and I couldn't wait on but remember the first time I'd heard CHARLOTTE'S WEB read to me by a schoolteacher.

The fable is timeless and will always be around. But it's been waiting all this time for movie-making magic to truly unlock a method for audiences to peep it presented so great in the flesh.

No only is the video aspect so edifying, but the notify talent gathered for the film is outstanding. Julia Roberts, Steve Buscemi, Oprah Winfrey, Cedric The Entertainer, Reba McEntire, and many other recognizeable voices (including Sam Shepard as the narrator) all contributed to this extraordinary experience.

If you want to have a substantial time and be a child again, go witness CHARLOTTE'S WEB. If you want to bring delight to a child, seize one with you. You'll be jubilant you did.
As with Walden's first adaptation--The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe--this is an okay movie that could have been vastly better. It is a suited adaptation to Wardrobe, in that it follows the source material more faithfully both in record and characterization, but it unexcited fails most in those key areas, and in primary ways that the provocative version didn't.

The most off-putting and probably most egregious error on director Winick's piece is to produce Fern such an impertinent, downright snotty itsy-bitsy girl. In the book Fern is sure, but not crude. Neither is her father the milquetoast that he's made to be in the film. Ditto Templeton the rat, who is turned from an sinister malcontent into an outright bully. Such characterizations are completely unnecessary and in fact detract from the account. (Which again was the core failure with The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. Seems to be a Walden thing.)

This ties into a jam with the casting in general. Julia Roberts was simply the atrocious state for Charlotte. The '73 version had the advantageous grace and foresight to cast Debbie Reynolds as Charlotte. Reynolds' soothing, melodic teach was perfect for a creature meant to be soothing and fascinating. There is life and wonder and hope in it. Roberts' divulge is simply too flat and nasally, and becomes actually grating. The casting on the rest of the animals was elegant (though the body humor got worn after the second "joke"; I long for the days when body "humor" wasn't considered simply share of kids' movie genre), but of the humans only Beau Bridges stands out. I like the actors who played the various parts, but they too approach off as tedious. The whole affair is simply flat, which is ironic considering the wondrousness of the anecdote attempting to be told.

And then there's the decision to go with hyperrealistic special effects. I found myself wishing they'd stayed with the orderly animation that introduced the movie. Instead we're treated to super-macro shots of a spider gracious of an electron microscope. Director Winick should have had the sense to realize that there's no draw to construct a spider cuddly in close-up. The interesting '73 film was wise enough not to try; it showed Charlotte in unbiased enough detail to give her make and features, and left it that. This one, again like The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, wants to indicate off at the expense of the narrative.

Some of the non-book material is witty, but for the most fragment it's not and obviously tacked on to tickle kiddies' silly bones. It does, so in that sense I roar it works, but it's laziness on the piece of the filmmakers to feel it's distinguished.

In sum, what should be a magical, uplifting movie comes off as flat and, in fact, a minute dull. Maybe one of these days the film industry will examine that special effects and high-caliber casts aren't enough to achieve a lackluster script. It always comes down to the writing, and it simply isn't very superior in this version of Charlotte's Web. It has its heart in the lawful set, and doesn't stray far from the current book in valid region, for which I have to commend it at least three stars, but it's more keen in being a comedy made for kids than a drama made for quick-witted people, young and ragged. This is why the '73 version continues to maintain my kids in thrall after at least a derive of viewings, but they were so bored on a second watching of this fresh film that they wanted to leave early.

1999 was one of the greatest years in fresh memory for film. Yet Eyes Wide Shut is all but absent from the end-of-the-year awards ceremonies and most critics lists.

The first thing to have in mind are that this film was hyped blueprint beyond necessity. As if the general public had any interest in the "Kubrick" listed below "Glide" and "Kidman". To them this was unbiased another Titanic Actor's next Grand Movie. Passing it off like a "valid Hollywood couple gets busy on the titanic veil" heightened expectations for something Kubrick wasn't trying to accomplish. It suffered the same audience reaction as The Phantom Menace, and made only a part of the money.

Critics seemed to be lining up to buy potshots at this film. Why? Unique history shows us that all of Kubrick's films from 2001 onward have been attacked critically, and subsequently hailed as classic years later. The same is apt of most of Orson Welles' work. Few critics took the time to gaze this movie more than once before spewing their venom. A filmmaker like Kubrick is not going for shriek emotional contact with the audience. He is aiming far deeper, asking the viewer to contemplate on not only the images, but the themes, and the emotional investments of the characters. The subtlety is not something accepted in today's films, and something critics apparently can't process snappily enough to meet a press deadline.

For all those complain that the film isn't sexy or erotic enough are missing the point completely. It's not about sex. It's about many other things, some of which linger in the background, some that aren't noticeable on the initial viewing. Kubrick raises questions about our institution of marriage, the nature of faith, commitment, temptation. That most in the audience weren't willing to meet Kubrick, Fly, and Kidman halfway in this meditation isn't a comment on the quality on the filmmaking, it's a shortcoming of the sensory-deadened society. If Kubrick had been more in touch with today's film culture, would he have bothered to give us this complex of an experience? Let's thank him for his seclusion.

A Ticket on the DVD not being letterboxed: Kubrick (again, like Welles) preferred the aspect ratio of television, and left extra dwelling in his frame for their widescreen theatrical showings (some are letterboxed on Home Video as well) . The Knowing, Pudgy Metal Jacket, and Eyes Wide Shut are meant to be seen in the full-screen standard format, and therefore aren't available in letterbox, so don't feel you're being cheated out of any compositional inform. Unfortunately you are being cheated by Warner Bros' refusal to prefer the digital figures blocking the orgy scenes, inserted for theatrical release to pick up the "R" rating. Only in America...

The Special Edition is a welcome release simply because it's the unrated, European, uncensored version of the film. I won't originate to review the film itself except to say that it's probably Kubrick's least appreciated and most underrated film--undeservedly so-- I personally judge it's honest as vivid as his other works. Examine it more than once before you settle.

That said, the recent Warner release has some flaws. The disk is supposed to own BOTH versions of the film (unrated and rated), but it ONLY contains the unrated version (better that than unprejudiced the rated one!) . But the packaging says it contains both, so there's a grand boo-boo. Also, it was originally advertised that the film would have commentary by Sydney Pollack and someone else-- but there is no commentary on the film (and it doesn't say as such on the packaging... so it must have been decided not to include it for some reason) . Nevertheless, it was originally touted in press releases that it would have commentary that I was looking forward to hearing.

After that, the extras a pleasurable and the movie looks huge. But someone at Warner Home Video needs to have a reprimanding! :)

Director Betty Thomas has achieved something rare: A fresh movie that tackles a serious roar and emerges with it's tastefulness intact. "28 Days" has the status of a drama, the soul of a comedy, the feel of a documentary and a fantastic performance by Sandra Bullock that gives each genre a set in the blooming mix of this fantastic movie.

Bullock is Gwen Cummings, an alcoholic, pill popping journalist who is sentenced to exercise 28 days in a rehab center she drunkenly steals a limo and crashes it into a house. Leaving slow her boozy British boyfriend Jasper (superbly played by Domonic West), Gwen soon finds the encourage and belief of her eccentric and often hilarious fresh neighbors. There's Eddie (Viggo Mortensen), the washed up baseball player who'll sleep with anyone; Oliver (Mike O'Malley), the wisecracking Park Avenue pot addict; Andrea (Azura Skye), a young woman addicted to drugs and a preposterous soap opera called "Santa Cruz," which she eventually turns everyone on to; and Gerhardt (Alan Tudyk), the wacky German. "28 Days," unlike an "Erin Brokovich" where one star dominates, is an ensemble film that allows a variety of talents to shine. And with a cast of this caliber, sometimes that shine rivals the stars themselves in brightness.

Despite many comic moments, it's the dramatic aspects of "28 Days" that design it expansive. When Gwen becomes so desperate for her pills that she jumps out the window to accept some she threw away earlier, the obsessiveness and despair of dependency are captured at their most intellectual. Then there's her stunned relationship with her sister Lily (sensitively portrayed by Elizabeth Perkins), who can't determine whether she wants to give up on the woman who has never been there for her, or stand by her in the hope that she will reform, risking having her heart broken yet again.

It's because Bullock and screenwriter Susannah Grant have made Gwen such a likable character that these situations have genuine bite. Sine we can't choose whether we appreciate her or disapprove her, we preserve watching the movie on the edge of our seats, searching for something that will proove to us once and for all what Gwen Cummings is. The movie wisely avoids giving us a straight retort to that and many other questions, allowing the viewer instead to construct their absorb decisions and design their absorb relationaships with the characters and the things they encounter.

"28 Days" is a triumph for all keen. There's nothing better for a cynical critic like me then proof on the shroud that films appealing stories with challenging characters are level-headed being made. Perhaps the best news of all is the resurrection of Sandra Bullock's career after three flops in a row. If she continues to explain such wise judgement in choosing her projects, this unpleasant man's Julia Roberts may be topping the A-list once again.

Sandra Bullock is the industry's common girl next door, remarkable to her maintain well-reported chagrin. But there is unprejudiced something about her that exudes "next-door" charm, whether or not she supports the label's overuse. Maybe it's because she's such a gem of a person, especially compared to the coldness of many of today's grand stars.

So when you are about to eye this film you will anticipate that it be light-hearted, not serious, in other-words, totally Sandra. But the only thing light-hearted about the movie are the circumstances several of the supporting cast members gain themselves into. Sandra plays this alcoholic with all of the angst she's got. So is she depressing to sight like this? Yes and no. Depressing because, based on those heinous preconceptions us slothful viewers have, you're waiting for her to jump out and say "Unbiased kidding!" throughout the movie - her usual style - and, to everyone's surprise, she really doesn't. She gives every ounce of credibility and intensity to a role that many would like to write off simply b/c it is too hard to change one's preconceptions.

I am so wrathful when I stumble upon a performance, such as this one, that allows me to deepen my respect for an actor. Sandra has deepened everyone's respect with this role. She is a consummate professional actress: She plays every role as if it were herself and only herself on the shroud.

And hey, even if it IS only acting, she fooled me . . .

This film gets 4 stars only b/c I don't beget in perfection. But it is all that and more! Brown Sugar is a cleverly gripping, but immensely political film that will only be fully appreciated by those who were exposed to right hip hop music pre-gangsta rap/Vanilla Ice/MC Hammer cartoon character [stuff] that totally casts African Americans into narrower caricatures while mocking the creative, sparkling art earn in its truest nature.

All of the other reviews will sing you about the place. I'll demolish it down like this. The film is metaphorical. Sid (Sanaa Lathan) and Dre (Taye Diggs) relate accurate hip hop -- the pure creative stuff with expansive lyrics & fair uplifting substance most mainstream folks don't hear on the radio. They each try to accumulate together with other folks (Boris, Nicole) who narrate the misguided mainstream that's partially at fault for the overtly racist, simplistic "rap music" that gets so grand hype, radio air play and industry promotion attention today.

The marriage between Diggs and Nicole (whatever) doesn't work out in the raze b/c (as I understand the point the writers were trying to obtain) a union between hip hop in its purest, realest develop and all that [stuff] that's unbiased designed to sell records to misguided white folks who reflect that's all there is to the music can't work -- also sending a message that artists shouldn't comprise and sell out objective to sell records.

That's why Diggs quits his job & that's why he tries to promote Mos Def's character ... one that represents all the actual, creative, colorful and above ...booty shake rappers who don't salvage great sales and radio airplay.

This movie courageously attempts to assail the music industry and mainstream consumers who don't know what proper hip hop is -- and thus either occupy into all of this violent, misogynistic music that gets promoted b/c they really mediate that's the extent of the life of African Americans OR people that disapprove it altogether b/c they assume since that's all they hear and survey then that's the fat extent of hip hop music.

The true reason the "Rin and Tin" characters are such laughing stocks is b/c the writers are both mocking the fallacious music passed off as rap music that sells today in the mainstream AND hoping audiences that explore this movie laugh and procure the proper joke in concept these characters aren't obedient and thus not true.

Hip hop is a culture of expression -- greatly varied in message and creativity.

Brown Sugar gives a roar to all those fed up with negative, stereotypical rappers getting promoted to predominantly white audiences who often hold into it -- thus shutting out more creative, lawful, talented rappers with sure, fun and deeper messages in their lyrics.

True hip hop is fun and can shriek every aspect of life like all other genres.

Hopefully, objective as in the movie's poetic ending with Mos Def getting radio airplay, trusty hip hop artists will come by the promotion they deserve and give the art effect a better name among the mainstream that sadly composed knows absolutely nothing about its essence.

As I recognize it this movie is creative and clever b/c of its parallel between social commentary on the new residence of the music industry, what sells, what's sincere and what should sell with this adore narrative.

Sid and Dre are together b/c "loyal recognizes trusty." That's Brown Sugar.

This movie is radiant and involving and modern, but sadly most the the reviewers of this movie TOTALLY MISSED the point.

If you opinion this was unprejudiced another romantic comedy, then of course you'd believe this was fair a run-of-the-mill, predictable movie.

If you weren't exposed and/or have no notion of what hip hop was before it's crossover period, circa-1990 with Fraudulent, gimmicky artists with no skill like Vanilla Ice and MC Hammer who keep out anything that would sell records, don't inspect this movie -- someone else will only have to smash it down to you later.

Like the Amazon.com Review (Jeff Shannon) says above (please read carefully), the LEAST racy aspect of this movie is Dre & Sidney's relationship.

The gist of the movie is how Dre & Sid's relationship is written as a instruct parallel and with commentary on the music business of how hip hop lost its soul when it crossed over and became commercial.

Every scene in the movie is metaphorical and attests to this commentary.

Dre & Sid's friendship as innocent young kids in the 1980s parallels the birth of hip hop and its innocent period.

Dre & Sid's outside (dating) relationships parallel hip hop selling out honest enough in the mainstream to survive.

Dre's ultimate marriage to Reece, a groundless, money-grubbing, location quo symbol, parallel's hip hop's crossover to the mainstream and going commercial.

Finally, Dre & Sid's hookup as an official couple on Angie Martinez's Hot97 is like this film's writer's personal commentary that ultimately, hip hop has to return to its roots to fade forward (kind of like a Hip Hop Sankofa view, looking back/understanding the past in order to recede forward) .

Like I said, if you don't know what hip hop music was pre-1990, you won't understand half of the movie and thus you won't savor what the 4 & 5-star reviewers of this movie ogle in its creativity.

This film was written with a purpose and I hope, despite meager sales, we score more like this one instead of the stereotypical, dumbed-down stuff that Hollwyood keeps pushing.

The DVD transfer is qualified in both sound and describe quality, and the Itsy-bitsy Edition Collectors Residence with the additional goodies (Single sheet poster, shooting draft, lobby cards etc.) is a accurate bonus for eager film fans!!

One of my favourite cop thrillers....McQueen sizzles on veil!!
I have read GQ and other men's fashion magazines for the last 20 years. No single person is mentioned as a men's style icon more often than Steve McQueen, and this movie defines his style most clearly. What I believe that is not often understood, is why his style is so beloved. It is minimalist, yes, but also, this is someone not playing the middle class America game.

1) He lives in a cramped apartment. The furniture is ordinary, with a few hip 60's touches. (Stare for the recount over his bed, his paisley bathrobe, the frigid paper hanging lampshade, and a couple of hippie style items on the walls) . You gain the impression he owns about six pairs of clothes at most. He eats cheap frozen dinners (except for the occasional date at the frigid San Fran Restaurant) . He is not wasting this time and life keeping up with the Jones's.

2.) He is not climbing the career ladder. On this case, he doesn't give a understanding to politics. He is not chasing the American ideal of success.

3.) Sight closely and you will search for his car, the most well-known in any movie ever, is a olive drab color. Not candy apple lustrous red. It is a Mustang, a symbol of blue collar America. It is dusty, and he parks it in the street, not a garage. He does not peek it for door dings every time he goes out to it. It has dents in it. You accumulate the impression he doesn't employ his free time polishing and waxing it.

4.) He doesn't exhaust his time chasing money. He spends it on his job, trying to do what he thinks is proper, not what is suitable for office politics and promotion.

5.) His clothes are 60's pre-hippie fashion perfection (notice for the extremely tapered legs, the suede loafers, and of course the notorious tweed blazer and blue turtleneck) .

In summary, I believe it is comic that people idolize McQueen's personal style in this movie and yet they don't realize why. It is not unprejudiced the stoicism, or minimalism. It is the feeble fashion American values (deem Weak West) . Impartial something to deem about as you behold one of my accepted movies of all time.

The Grand Race certainly didn't bag its due when it was released -- it wasn't even nominated for Best Describe, Director or any of the Acting awards. In fact, it was only nominated for Film Editing! It seems, however, that the film doesn't even rep its beneficial due today as it was not on the American Film Institute's 100 Greatest Film list despite its mammoth following.

The Big Elope is certainly one of the most memorable films I've ever seen. The cast includes the tedious tremendous Steve McQueen, James Garner, Richard Attenborough (Director of Gandhi), Charles Bronson, James Coburn, James Donald (Bridge on the River Kwai), Donald Pleasance and David McCallum (The Man From U.N.C.L.E.) . McQueen's performance is riveting and makes the viewer miss him all the more. Garner, who actually was a "Scrounger" during the Korean War, is terrific. It's also particularly nice to gape a performance as a generous guy from Pleasance and as a human being by Bronson (sorry, but Bronson truly wasted his talent in the Death Wish movies) . And in an era when studios tried to substitute backlot sets for on residence filming, the POW camp, which was built on site in Germany, looks completely authentic and makes the audience sympathize with the prisoners' problem even more. The DVD heightens the experience by presenting the film letterboxed in distinct, vibrant colors. In addition, the DVD edition includes a documentary on both the trusty epic and the making of the film. This film is a classic and the DVD edition does it stout justice and makes you realize what a mistake the AFI made by excluding it from its list.

Here's to "the fifty."

I saw The Mountainous Hurry in the plunge of 1963 when I was 8 years ragged. In my hometown during those days moviegoing was a family affair-- wear nice slacks and shirt etc. Seeing this titanic movie with the macho stars on a tremendous shroud with booming sound made quite an impression on me. Steve McQueen was simply the "King Of Cold" and he became my approved film star.

This movie has transcended generations -- my 18 year faded son recently viewed it and he was totally engrossed in this fabulous fair sage of men seeking freedom under the most desperate circumstances. He agreed with me that "they don't manufacture em like they former to" and that most of the films today can't fill a candle to The Enormous Run.

The DVD is pleasant -- the color and report quality is first rate -- looks fair like when I saw it in the plunge of 1963 at the passe Capitol Theatre in Rome, NY. The featurette on the making of The Huge Rush is a nice feature that I never saw before.

The legendary Howard Hawks directed this WWII classic about the Mary Ann, a B-17 bomber lead by Captain John Ridgely and featuring crew members Gig Young, Harey Carey, Arthur Kennedy, Charles Drake, George Tobias, Ray Montgomery, and John Garfield. On a routine mission to Hawaii, the crew arrives impartial hours after the Pearl Harbor attack and earn themselves thrust into war. Other stops include Wake Island and the Philippines. Of course, one of the purposes of this film was to rally the American spirit, and it features some of the anti-Japanese dialogue you'd have to seek information from. But the film succeeds beyond the propaganda value. The action sequences are well filmed and inviting, with terrific aerial action and some genuine ground sequences, too. The camraderie amongst the crew is credible. Each member has his maintain shrimp "benefit memoir" as you would quiz, but these aesthetic character actors accomplish it all very believable (Harry Carey is a particular standout) . This film is a good WWII classic.

On their draw to Pearl Harbor, a flight of B-17 bombers near at the height of the Japanese attack at the initiate of WW2. After landing they are told to refuel and flit on to the Philippines where they are to fight the Japanese. Many problems ensue but the crew pulls together and takes the fight to the Japanese. This is truly one of the best WW2 movies with lots of action and a relatively unknown cast...stars Harry Carey, Sr, a young John Garfield, and the B-17 "Mary-Ann". The interplay between crew members and the Marines in the Philippines is worth the stamp of admission alone. A long lost classic finally being released....DO Not miss this one..!!!

I went ahead and reviewed each disc individually -- fair because the work of these directors is too diverse to be described in one 300 word review....

Here's what I judge about this series vs. the first one. I liked the first series very remarkable, and notion the whole conception was mammoth (not vivid that they were going to continue the series) . However, the second boxset is bigger, bolder, and regardless of others say, has comparable if not better material than the first. Jonze, Gondry, and Cunningham are broad directors, but in no plot do they sit on a pedestal above guys like Anton Corbijn or Designate Romanek, no design. I was less familiar with Stephane Sednaoui than the other directors, but even his work is spectacular in its occupy intention (it's distinguished different than the other directors, very French) .

There's one thing in particular that sets the Directors Stamp apart from other video compilations: diversity. Instead of objective packing every director who's worked with Radiohead into a series, several talented directors from very different schools are brought together. This allows us to compare and incompatibility their styles, techniques, and everything else that puts a film/videography/cinematography/etc nut in heaven. The only thing that series is missing is some directors in the Hip Hop realm, and Palm announced that they'd be adding a unique installment for these directors next year.

If you're not familiar with the Directors Impress Series, come by a friend who owns some of the discs or rent a couple of them, otherwise you'll kick yourself if you rob one first and ruin up craving the boxset. And honestly, the only scheme to truly savor this series is to have all the directors, their recent styles, and their material together -- it's an experience.

rather over dramatic introduction to each chapter. It begins accurately enough, with the first year of World War II. France & all of Europe had been defeated by June 1940 & the English Channel Islands have been occupied. Preparations have already been made for the defeat of England & Operation Sea Lion, the right invasion in September 1940. Interestingly the German troops occupying The Channel Islands & Paris were well behaved & actually spent their have money on the local economy. This may have lulled many Brits. Then alternative history takes over with a vengence. The German air force badly defeats the RAF, the ability to invent more planes & the early warning system of radar stations are destroyed. Having cleared the skies the Germans employee the dreaded blitzgrieg by air & 100,000 land troops. Churchill is killed in his bunker & the royals soar to Canada. The home guard & what is left of the British army retreats from the coastal areas in disarray. Six weeks later the Germans march into London. Now the the Nazis remove off the velvet glove. Preparations for the administration of an occupied Britain had been made years before, that reality is made obvious in this movie. Most alternative history strains the bonds of credulity & Hitler's Britain is no exception. That is section of the enjoyment. So 2,000,000 men are rounded up & sent to Paris as POW's & hostages so the rest of the population behaves & does not resist. Quite a task to do so hasty. The Nazis even have a itsy-bitsy dusky book with the names of socially prominent people. Masons, Socialist, Liberals, Jews are all identified. Especially immigrant Jews. They were targeted for immediately disposal. In reality the British has already done this dinky task rounding up all non-native Jews as war approached. The police were co-opted by collaborators in their miidst & appeasers like Lord Halifax were enisted to back. Edward VIII, abdicated as king of England before the war had been identified as sympathetic to the Nazis & was reinstalled as King. The movie extrapolates on. Britain's atomic secrets from America are obtained by Germany & the rocket science we obtained create German scientist in reality is never realized. The last scene of a Swastika on the mooon is quite disconcerting. The movie is entirely done with newsreel & documentary footage, some you may even examine. But if you like history or even "what if" history you'll bask in this.

On the whole, this DVD is acceptable, especially given the bargain tag, under $10.00, and 95-minutes of running time. Nevertheless, I expected more on what the British might have had in store for the Germans had they really attempted an invasion, pursuant to Operation Sea Lion. That invasion would have launched something like 250,000 men onto the shores of southern England in an grief to steal over the country by force in the summer of 1940. Befriend from the German navy and air force would have been massive, but precarious, given the strength of the RAF.

The DVD is OK for what it is, but could have offered a lot more.

Since I've been watching a ton of Eurohorror classics lately, now is as generous as a time as any to say a few words about "Daughters of Darkness." I made a philosophize some time ago to ignore vampire films as a general rule. It's not that I strongly loathe all vampire films, mind you, but I objective feel like the genre has been done to death over the years. Something queer and fabulous is going on in this movie, but you have to wait awhile to scrutinize it. You unprejudiced gotta care for this film. "Daughters of Darkness" is one of the best vampire films I have ever seen for a multitude of reasons. Every situation section seems to telegraph a sense of impending doom for the film's participants. Finally, you simply won't possess your eyes when Stefan calls his mother on the phone. The movie starts off with a scene of a spacious cargo ship sitting at a dock off some California skim, and a astronomical, coffin shaped crate being loaded on a truck. I guess, among the Count's other supernatural powers, creating wind and lighting, manipulating objects with his mind, mind control over animals and humans, natty natural strength, he can also beget mud. After hearing a wolf howl, the couple decides not to straggle befriend to the Count's house but to use the night in the minibus, and after a itsy-bitsy lovin' in the wait on of the van, they are soon visited by a unlit stranger (two guesses who) . As the movie progresses, the Count takes a couple of women (Count Yorga needs women!) in the intention vampires do, and the men launch to suspect something is gross, and whatever it is, it's directly linked to Count Yorga. I kept injecting my hold lines for terrible Brudah when he had none...I imagined when he spoke, each sentence would be preceded by his bear name..."Brudah want woman"..."Brudah drive car"..."Brudah need shave"....

The dialog throughout the movie is rather clunky but oddly realistic at times. The actor playing Count Yorga, Robert Quarry, was the highlight of the movie, really getting into the allotment creating a truly believable and scary character. I vaguely recognized him, but then remembered seeing him in Dr. Phibes Rises Again (1972) . The direction was passable, but got annoying at times, especially during scenes with conversation, as the director would design many needless cuts assist and forth between characters, sometimes showing the support of a character who was speaking... there was some blood and one scene in particular, with a cat, that was comely monstrous. The one actor most will probably perceive in this film is Michael Murphy, who played the mayor in Batman Returns (1992) and has been in a few Woody Allen movies like Manhattan (1979) and The Front (1976) . Kelljan does a shapely friendly job of keeping the site ticking along, and Quarry does provide some solid scares....especially the shots of him bearing down on his victims in humdrum motion, arms outstretched and fangs bared. Well worth a study, "Count Yorga" is an curious share of vampire cinema that provided the genre with noteworthy needed original blood.

"Field-sequential" or "alternating-image" 3-D isn't a recent conception on video. The biggest push for it was in the mid-80s by JVC for their VHD format. How pleasant is the 3-D and the transfer? Comely darn beneficial. The transfer is slightly narrower than the movie was intended to be. I'm told this is because there were some problems with the film that made it well-known to prick it down a bit. Overall, it came out OK, but there are several scenes that have action too advance the edge of the veil. Even on a non-overscanning note, it's a bit too tight.

As usual in 3-D movies, there are some scenes that honest don't work. That's not the fault of this disc, but it makes some scenes tough to peruse. Unfortunately, the worst shot is the very first. It's exquisite considerable unwatchable. The pleasurable news is it only lasts as long as the opening credits and things steal up considerably from there.

Speaking of watching, what do you need to ogle this? To peer it on a TV, you'll need shutter glasses (not included, but widely available) and an interlaced demonstrate. That means you can't utilize a plasma or LCD present and you'll need to disable progressive exhibit on your DVD player. If you can't do that, there are options for viewing on computers with distinct combinations of hardware and software.

And Dracula really is astounding. I've seen a lot of movies that were a lot worse, both in 3-D and flat.

Bottom line: for 3-D enthusiasts and collectors (and fans of this movie, I guess), this disc is a must have. This is, hands down, the best design to contemplate this movie on video. 3D For Your TV could have a hit on their hands, and almost certainly will if they can secure some better (or at least better known) movies for their future projects.
Anyone keen in 3D movies will be blown away by this one. The 3D image in it is so obliging to any I've ever seen, including IMAX!! The sage is droll, but sharp, only it is the 3D graphics that will withhold you watching this over and over. There is enough "out of the hide" action to develop you giggle, and the in depth image is so crystal well-organized. I can only hope that the company that made it, 3dforyourtv.com will continue to invent more of these fun movies in such a vast 3D format.

For Scars of Dracula, Christopher Lee's 5th outing as the Count, Lee gets more cover time and dialogue than usual, but for most of its length SoD is only mildly diverting. The film has a drab, low-budget aura, and the script is unexcited mostly of recycled ideas. Roy Ward Baker (director of a number of ravishing genre movies, e.g. Quatermass and the Pit, Asylum, Vampire Lovers), was apparently timorous by the sadism of Anthony Hinds' screenplay, and cynically decided to give Hammer what they wanted, accounting for the even greater emphasis on bloody violence than usual for a Hammer production. Unfortunately, the overall results don't reach terminate to Baker's usually high standard. The normally sumptuous Hammer sets are cluttery and chintzy-looking and Moray Grant's cinematography is flat and TV-like; the whole movie really looks too knowing and tidy to generate any staunch gothic atmosphere. The tiny of Dracula's castle is fairly convincing (until it's situation on fire), but the splatter makeups are simply poor, and the mechanical bat might be more effective were it not so overused and overlit. Dennis Waterman and Jenny Hanley generate dinky chemistry or charisma as the hero and heroine, and Patrick Troughton as Klove is objective sort of there with no explanation whatsoever (though it's nice to survey Michael Ripper in a bit larger allotment than usual as the innkeeper) . Also on the plus side: a few effective action sequences and shocks, Hanley and Anouska Hempel are attractive, and Delia Lindsay reveals her derriere early in the film (the only bit of nudity in a movie that could've extinct more, if only to liven things up) . Surprisingly, unbiased when you contemplate the movie's a goner, things lift up at the climax: Dracula's eyes ravishing through his eyelids (a very eerie conclude), a brief shot of Lee crawling up the castle wall as in Stoker's recent, and a rousing pyrotechnic finale. But it's attractive distinguished a case of "too miniature too unhurried." Scars really makes me enjoy the freshness and style of Freddie Francis' Dracula Has Risen from the Grave (so far MIA on DVD) . While not as disastrous as some have described, Scars of Dracula impartial barely aces Prince of Darkness for least of the Hammer Draculas (up to that point anyway) . There are virtually no noticeable physical defects. Extras include a very desirable 1.85:1 letterboxed British release trailer, rather shabby-looking letterboxed American release combo trailer (with Apprehension of Frankenstein), poster/still gallery, talent bios for Lee and Baker, and an audio commentary by the star and director, moderated by Hammer historian Marcus Hearn. Erudite and opinionated, Lee tends to dominate the discussion, but all three contribute plenty of gripping information about the film and many other topics (mostly Hammer-related) as well. My copy of this DVD also came with a special `limited edition' bonus disc featuring a 1995 documentary "The Many Faces of Christopher Lee." Rather than the expected tired rehash of Lee's film appearances, the hour-long program is actually a capable surprise, as Christopher Lee literally invites us into his home, displays prized memorabilia and photos, relates personal anecdotes (on such wide-ranging subjects as his operatic ancestors, Bela Lugosi's ring, Rasputin, Vincent and Peter, and Fu Manchu), and even gives brief lessons on fencing and gunfighting, all interspersed with numerous clips from his films. The bonus disc also includes two lame music videos by some really cheesy lounge act co-featuring Mr. Lee (he duets on O Sole Mio/It's Now or Never in one) . You'll probably belief these once out of curiosity and never study at them again. In total another comely package from Anchor (unfortunately one that makes you wish the movie itself was as meticulously crafted) . Three stars for the movie, five for the DVD.

Fans of Christopher Lee and/or Hammer Films, don't wait on this one. Regain the "Petite Edition" and you'll be treated to a gracious bonus disc, that includes an hour-long documentary hosted by the man himself, plus two MUSIC VIDEOS featuring Mr. Lee singing! A rare treat which makes the DVD worth buying. As for SCARS OF DRACULA, it's neither the best nor worst in the series. Widely reputed as the most violent Hammer Dracula, the film has not been viewed favorably (detractors include Lee himself---check him out on the commentary track!) . But if you can avoid comparing the film to the studio's earlier, obliging films (particularly those helmed by Terence Fisher), you might unbiased catch a decent panic movie waiting to be discovered. As expected from the nice folks at Anchor Bay, the characterize and sound quality are valid, surpassing DRACULA PRINCE OF DARKNESS (in my plan) . But the extras really overshadow the beautifully-transferred, but flawed film. Sink your teeth into this one, fright fans!

But Bynes is one actress who has already reached television stardom through her shows "The Amanda Note" and "What I Like About You" and at the age of 16 she traveled to Europe to appear in a movie appropriately titled "American Girl."

Before it was released (in early 2003) its title had been changed to "What a Girl Wants" and I sat there in a movie theater brilliant slight about it. I knew it had been filmed in my home country and starred Colin Firth who had been so ample in "Bridget Jones' Diary," I came away impressed by the humorous timing and the looks of an actress that would obviously in years-to-come plot movie screens on fire.

"What a Girl Wants" is at its heart a account about a girl searching to fetch herself. Bynes plays Daphne Reynolds and her mother Libby is played by Mrs. John Travolta (Kelly Preston) . The two live in Unusual York City and Daphne spends her time helping out at weddings where her mother is a singer and longing to know a father she has never met. It is observing the father-daughter dance at one of these weddings (where the filmakers traditional true fathers and daughters) that our hearts go out to Daphne and she determines a drastic concept of action - traveling to London and confronting her absent father.

The movie has it all - heart, laughter, suspense, romance. Its culture clash theme has been done before and better (Crocodile Dundee for example) but we have so grand emotion invested in Daphne's pickle that we cannot encourage but become engrossed in this movie.

Jonathon Pryce proves that his villainous turn in "Tomorrow Never Dies" was no fluke by pulling out a large performance here as the political advisor of Daphne's father (Firth) . Thing is, Firth's character -Henry - is running for political office and Pryce sees Daphne as a liability to his boss' career and her presence an obstacle to his becoming father-in-law to the wealthy and politically worthy Henry.

This DVD has an impressive number of special features, the crown jewels of which are the two scene specific audio commentaries, one by Bynes and the second by the director and two writers.

I Liked how the subtitles automatically approach up when commentaries are playing. If you have only seen it once it helps sustain track of where you are in movie.
Light, fluffy, exuberant Amanda Bynes chats about working with the other actors, and how intimidated she was by some of the people she worked with. In her commentary she mentions how the weather was when a scene was shot - it was hot, hunid, raining etc
Obviously Bynes has a astronomical deal of respect for Firth and Preston and almost inevitably Bynes spends a lot of time talking about clothes - grand boots when hopping over the wall, commenting on how unsightly the dress to a ball is etc. Bynes literally coos over emotional moments.
Hers is a fun commentary, but there are some gaps. I liked the recounting of anecdotal moments such as her tale of being mobbed by fans on bridge that crew could not come by permission to stop for shooting.
On the second commentary director Dennie Gordon joined by the two writers Jenny Bicks and Elizabeth Chandler (the Amazon listing is mistaken in identifying them as actors) . As one might query this is more technical in details and as such serves as a nice difference to Bynes solo track. The writers discuss such matters as how long they worked on it, the unusual inspiration and discuss different titles (the fresh title "American Girl" is mentioned on both tracks) . The director talks about how astounding the actors are and seems particularly satisfied with Bynes performance.
Overall this is a very delectable family film and a vast DVD package.
My friends saw the coming attractions for this movie a number of months ago. When they saw that it starred Colin Firth, they all shouted at the conceal, "What Peggy Wants." I'm a confirmed firth-a-holic. But, I plan this movie might be another "Thousand Acres" and so waited til it came out on DVD to perceive it.

This is not large art or even mountainous cinema. But, hell, it's a lot of fun! And many times that's what I crave from a movie.

The upright acting comes from Mr. Firth who is perfectly cast as the English gentleman who would be PM -- and looks a bit like Tony Blair to boot.

His wild past with an American rock singer comes to an kill that is elephantine of deception. And 17 years later his daughter from that past comes to regain her dad.

Amanda Bynes is cute. She doesn't really need to act. Level-headed, the on cloak chemistry between she and Firth brings out some potentially wonderful talent in this adorable young lady.

There's a lot of pleasurable humor and the music ain't dreadful either.

The scene where Firth dons leather pants and dances in front of the mirror is imspired.

For trivia buffs -- Anna Chancelor plays Mr. Firth's fiancee who is in it for the political prestige. Some may gawk her as the unmarried Miss Bingley from the A&E/BBC Pride and Prejudice. She's a mountainous character actress. She doesn't derive him in this record, either.

And -- was it my imagination that her stuck up daughter (Clarissa) bears such a striking resemblance to Reese Witherspoon? Reese played Firth's ward in The Importance of Being Earnest.

Ok. Final thoughts. It's a fun movie. As with Bridget Jones's Diary -- it's also a feel marvelous movie -- and those are the ones I tend to gawk again and again. Granted: Bridget Jones is an example of big film as well as a fun movie. Unruffled, with Colin Firth in What a Girl Wants -- so distinguished the better.

For several years, I stayed up well past 2am on Saturday nights hoping to accumulate reruns of the classic, burly SNL shows from 1975-1980. NBC was re-airing some of these stout programs in their entirety (not "best of" packages) with few exceptions, starting in the behind 1990s in most NBC outlets. Unfortunately, the modern cast shows were the exception and the Dana Carvey and/or Will Farrell years were the norm. After several years, I managed to videotape about 25-30 current cast shows, but only about 4 from the first season.

Younger audiences queer with the fresh SNL will likely be surprised by a number of things in viewing this ample collection. Firstly, for those of us who remember, SNL was the most unfamiliar and cutting-edge demonstrate to be found in those days. The belief of "leisurely night" television was certainly not then what it is today either. There really is no "behind night" anymore, what with hundreds of cable/satellite channels and the Internet to hold us entertained around the clock. In the '70s, however, behind night was a wasteland of feeble movies and reruns. Most stations ended their broadcast day by about 1 or 2am (for the tech-geners, this means the three network stations, one public set and typically about 3 or 4 local stations) . As far as the networks were concerned, Johnny Carson owned the airways after the local news; this was literally suitable in many ways. Although not on air during the weekend, Carson Productions was quite a considerable entity, owning many weekend program slots. Beyond local news & the Tonight Exhibit, there was diminutive interest in developing a "leisurely night" program. Secondly, SNL had colossal shock value for a culture that wasn't worn to seeing risqué material paraded constantly on broadcast TV. For that stuff, most of us had to go to the movies for "un-edited" material. VCRs were not yet in every household and cable was only available in miniature format in markets like Unusual York. In the culture that was then, SNL's impact was broad, providing primary "water cooler" chat on Monday morning. It was what people stayed home for on Saturday nights. It was really the only "hip" expose on TV.

The Not Ready for Primetime Players were a product of the counterculture 1960s. Great of their humor - especially the now surprising amount of drug references - will seem not only brazenly un-PC (thank heaven!), but incredibly raw for those outmoded to the, ironically, structured and institution-ized nature of the prove today. In this sense, the first season shows will not only appear dated, but also register contrivance over-the-heads of most younger viewers. SNL has always been and always will be a victim of instant-datedness, in gargantuan fraction due to one of their greatest attributes: topical comedy. Even some of us quiet familiar with the pressing issues of the 70s may have a hard time remembering every reference!

These earlier shows are also striking in their experimentation. The format we now know & like was at least two seasons in the making. The cast themselves were not considered as the main plot, amazingly enough, and their presence in the first few shows is remarkably sparse. In fact, the second episode is largely music-oriented. Many creative techniques were tried, and some fail miserably. Search For how poorly Abba (although a top-notch performance) are incorporated into an already-in-progress Robert Klein skit. Posthaste forward past the Muppets if you will...or, if you found them amusing & innovative, as I did, marvel at Jim Henson's monstrous (for him anyway) exhaust of drug-related humor! No matter what the result, it's gargantuan to stare a exhibit doughty enough to behold such diverse elements of entertainment, from short films, stand-up comedy, audience participation, to the even occasional employ of dramatic scheme & pathos in the skits. All these things are largely verboten on the point to today. Fondly remember a time when often obscure musical guests were chosen for their performance chops and uniqueness, and rarely their pop position, let alone how well they could lip synch (oddly this was not completely proper with Abba...but that's a long account!) . And of course, devour forever the genius blend of Trudge, Belushi, Aykroyd, Radner, Curtain, Newman and the unsung Garret Morris.

I must say that it is absolutely colossal that we can finally seek the shows as they were originally broadcast (minus the 25 minutes of commercials that I hated sitting through) . This is SNL in its prime. In seeing these uncut shows, you will peep objective how estimable the fresh cast was. Unbiased one demonstrate from this season is better than any yearly "Best Of" they can effect together from the novel cast.

THE DOWN SIDE: There has been diminutive concern made to restore the 30+ year veteran videotapes. The report is often soft with color bleeding to the just of objects on hide. The Graduate is a tall film and I grow to savor it more with each viewing. Everything is nearly perfect about it. The script, Mike Nichols' direction, the performances of Dustin Hoffman, Anne Bancroft and Katherine Ross, the music of Simon and Garfunkel. It's comical yet dramatic, engrossing and profound all at the same time. A very delicious film all around. Dustin Hoffman has rarely been better than in The Graduate, although he has certainly given many other dazzling performances (Midnight Cowboy, Rain Man, Kramer Vs. Kramer) . However, even more than those pictures, Hoffman will always be remembered for The Graduate and his portrayal of an awkward young man trying to accept a fill on his life.

Also worth noting in particular is the direction of Mike Nichols. He truly gives the film a current visual style to construct it an experience rather than honest a comedy/drama. Stamp the opening credits with Hoffman on an airport gripping sidewalk plot to the tune of Simon and Garfunkel's "The Sound of Silence". Nichols' uses cuts very interestingly in several scenes such as the scene where Benjamin jumps up on his raft in the pool, and lands in bed with Mrs. Robinson. He also uses zooms to sizable do throughout the film. Nichols' Best Director Oscar for this film was well-deserved. I contemplate that Hoffman's performance should have won also, as well as the screenplay by Calder Willingham and Buck Henry.

One other thing that I must mention is that The Graduate absolutely must been seen in its new aspect ratio! If you're not watching a widescreen version, then you're not watching The Graduate. The film was shot in the Panavision process with an aspect ratio of 2.35:1. Mike Nichols makes incredible expend of the 2.35:1 frame, so the film will be absolutely botched in pan and scan. If you see The Graduate in full-screen pan and scan, you're really, really missing out. The visual impact of the film will be irreparably damaged.

The DVD is adequate, but this film deserves remarkable better. The disc is labeled a special edition, but it's really too skimpy to be that. At very least you're getting a widescreen version of the film. However, the transfer is not enhanced for 16:9 televisions. What we need is a fully remastered 16:9 transfer which would be immensely advantageous. The report quality is handsome, but could be so mighty better. It's really gorgeous what disagreement a ticket unusual remastered 16:9 transfer can execute for an older film like this. Impartial inspect at the original DVD of One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. The film also deserves better supplemental materials. A better documentary and a commentary by the filmmakers would be expansive. A seperate commentary by Dustin Hoffman would be even better. I'm convinced that someday The Graduate will receive a gracious DVD edition, and I will wait until then to acquire it.

Looks like MGM finally is giving "The Graduate" a grownup DVD.

The Mike Nichols film has suffered through the DVD era so far, represented by a series of double-dip issues that perpetuated the same sorry source materials: grainy portray, grating audio -- the typical first-generation DVD blahs.

Here comes "The Graduate: 40th Anniversary Edition," due Sept. 11. Fox's specs indicate 2.35:1 widescreen with DTS and Dolby Surround. This appears to be in apt widescreen. (The previous DVDs' version apparently was created by throwing letterboxing atop the full-screen version. Seems the guy who was so huge on plastics got into the home video business.)

for my current tv exhibit. Yes, this season was a major departure from the unique premise of the indicate, some people may be establish off by how different it is. It's more violent, more disturbing, and mighty more intense. But it had me on the edge of my seat during almost every episode and I loved the novel additions to the cast, specifically Demian Bichir. Mary-Louise Parker was phenomenal, and I loved the direction Andy's (Justin Kirk) character took. There is quiet humor, but it's great less zany. My one criticism is what they did with Doug - he simply doesn't fit in well outside of Agrestic. But Nancy's progression from small-time dealer to a player in a Mexican drug cartel and its apt implications whose entertaining to gawk, and Jenji Kohan turned in a terrific finale, as usual.

I don't gawk how anyone can only give this point to one star. This season was definitely different, but it was about time they headed off in a modern direction. The characters all had a current open in season 4 after most of Agrestic burned down. There are some really comical subplots and substantial surprises along the arrangement. Many times I found myself wondering what the hell Nancy was doing and how could this possibly turn out okay for her in the kill? But that only added to the suspense and my enjoyment. My only accurate criticism was that Conrad and his family were not accounted for. I hope they develop a comeback sometime in the future to high-tail things up!

My exposure to Godard films were through VHS tapes. I was too young to witness his 60's films in their fresh formats. The transfer is not too substantial but first-rate enough. The colors are upright, it is thankfully letterboxed, etc. even if there are a few image distortions, artifacts and the sharpness and overall quality leaves a lot of room for improvement. There is something very unfavorable, however, with the sound especially towards the fifth chapter (that's the 5th access in the chapter search of which there are only 6 - thanks to Fox/Lorber!) Thankfully, this is a subtitled film (can't be switched off/on, they're pasted on the hide) otherwise, even the French won't understand the French dialogue. The noise distortion is abominable, but could it be Godard's deliberate map to mumble sound since it is the portion in which the CB radios or walkie-talkies were being conventional in the scene? My impression is that the technician in charge was probably asleep or didn't care when this noise distortion was taking position and the DVD didn't go through quality control which could have fixed it. I haven't seen the unusual so I don't know but since this is a Godard film, anything goes. But then the distortion continued even after that scene so any reasoning to defend Fox's negligience on this matter proved futile. I found it terribly distracting and I understanding it pulled down the quality all the more of this already mediocre DVD transfer. Is this the best version yet? How does the VHS version rate? Fox/Lorber is hit and miss with DVDs. They did great with Seven Beauties, Last Year at Marienbad, and the already LD Criterion-restored Umbrellas of Cherbourg and 400 Blows but did very poorly with A Woman is a Woman, several Truffaut films and even the relatively novel Padre Padrone. What a shame that a company like Fox/Lorber gets the rights to release these vast Foreign films but doesn't have the interest to approach up with quality transfers. I deem this is a slay of our hard-earned money to retract the DVDs that they earn. Next time you assume from Fox/Lorber, read the reviews... otherwise unbiased rent or wait for a better re-release in the future.

I saw a print of this film in NYC in the slow 80s. It was pristine, knowing and a big experience. Along with Truffaut, Godard epitomized the French Novel Wave of the '50s and '60s, and this film along with "Woman is a Woman," was one of his best. The utilize of color is astounding. Sadly, the source print for this DVD is oddly washed out, contains a few tears and pops in the sound track. It's hard to have there wasn't a better copy available for Fox Lorber to exhaust.

While Cecil B. DeMille's directorial skills were sometimes too rooted in the more grandiose style of the peaceful era, he CERTAINLY was ALWAYS a master showman, and his 1956 remake of "The Ten Commandments" is a whale of a note! Both pious and profane, posturing and genuine, it isn't grand history, but it abounds in spectacle. While he was in abominable health during the filming (suffering a seizure that was either a stroke or serene heart attack, while working under the 130-degree Egyptian sun), his distinctive 'style' was never more in evidence, with enormous, overwrought performances, delicate costumes and sets, monumental climaxes, and morals that are repeatedly hammered home. In 'classic' DeMille, there ARE no 'grays', everything is 'good' or 'evil', and 'evil' WILL be punished! Watching the film, you'll either like the 'ride', or you'll groan, again and again. Personally, I savor it, even with it's unintentional(? ) campiness!

Among my common 'so terrible it's FUN' moments are 'Rameses' Yul Brynner and 'Nefretiri' Anne Baxter's frequent employ of "Moses, Moses..." whenever he predicts something dire (Brynner looks like he can barely withhold a straight face, uttering the phrase) ; 'Sephora' Yvonne De Carlo's stoic, yet impassioned pitch to Moses to marry her, always looking away ('into the future', I presume), when comparing her assets to Nefretiri's; 'Dathan' Edward G. Robinson's entire performance (nearly chronicle hamminess from one of America's finest film actors) ; Woody Strode's Ethiopian 'Princess' companion, who praises Moses' kindness with so considerable heat and honey that Nefretiri suspects he was fooling around, down south; and Sir Cedric Hardwicke's 'Sethi', turning an Egyptian Pharoah into a world-weary lovable executive-type (one can't back but wonder how Rameses could be HIS son!)

Compared to Baxter's scenery-chewing, and Brynner's posturing, Charlton Heston's portrayal of Moses is so understated that he's often been criticized as 'wooden' in the role, which is unfair; while DeMille frequently posed him to match classic statues and paintings, his complete earnestness in the role, combined with his sheer physical presence, keeps him from receding into the backround of the spectacle that surrounds him. Despite thousands of Egyptian extras portraying Hebrews during the unbelievable 'Exodus' sequence, filling the camouflage, Heston always grabs and holds your attention; certainly no actor has ever been a more memorable Moses!

The film has some very sure merits; many of the special effects (particularly the 'Angel of Death' vapor, and the massive parting of the Red Sea) are collected fabulous, today; Elmer Bernstein's secure is an often 'over-the-top' joy to listen to; and the cast includes some very keen supporting players, including Nina Foch, Vincent Imprint, and DeMille's longtime associate, Henry Wilcoxon.

Taken as spectacle, as a gigantic entertainment for the senses, "The Ten Commandments" is quite a prove, and it's continued popularity over the past half-century is proof that many are calm captivated by it.

Okay. I admit it. Watching this Biblical myth, when it was a mainstay on ABC each Easter evening for some 30 years, I practically had the whole script memorized. . .even knew when Anne Baxter, as over-eager Nefretiri, would trot into a wickedly astonishing pattern of over-acting. ("Moses. . ." she would coo, "engage me in your arms. . .") I must have seen THE TEN COMMANDMENTS dozens of times, and yet, each year, I plopped my carcass on the couch on Easter evening, popcorn and suds in tow, and watched Cecil B. DeMille's 4-plus hour myth, completely mesmerized and entertained.

All of us know the story: a once-great Egyptian prince leads his just people, the Hebrews, into freedom from four centuries of slavery and bondage. It is a sizable legend, as four books of the Passe Testament aptly, well, attest. Yet what makes this flick truly astounding, impressive, and fun to sight, is the scope and mountainous scale of DeMille's 1956 epic--from the awesome vistas of Egypt, portrayed on a blue conceal in some Hollywood studio, to the blatantly corny, often comic, dialogue and actions of its characters (a distant reflection of the quiet film icon who dominates this represent) . Accordingly, THE TEN COMMANDMENTS, in particular, this DVD Special Collector's Edition, is an absolute blast for film buffs thirsty for more trivia and knowledge regarding one of Hollywood's alltime classics.

Here, in the astonishing commentaries that accompany the film, "The Ten Commandments" student and author Katherine Orrison furnishes an unbelievable, enthralling, and overwhelming avalanche of information. For instance: Did you know that DeMille's first choice for Queen Nefretiri was not Anne Baxter, but Audrey Hepburn? Yet, unfortunately, Hepburn lacked the figure to gain out the silk gowns so prevalent for her character, so Baxter got the nod. And. . .William Holden, not Yul Brynner, was pegged to play Rameses. . .yet Bill didn't want to have his head shaved, while Brynner was an international star following his clean-shaven skullcap in the "King And I." Brynner looked "Egyptian"; he got the piece, Holden was dispatched.

And I loved the "diaper pen" disclosure of infant Fraser Heston, who, of course, is Charlton Heston's son, and who played the baby Moses. I've watched this movie, again, dozens of times, but I never noticed the glistening diaper pen on sturdy Fraser's diaper, as the baby laid in his willowy basket, until a giggling Orrison brought it to my attention. Yep, there it is; yet DeMille was on a tight schedule. No time to go wait on and fair.

In fact, I did not realize that DeMille, 75 when this film was made, suffered a devastating heart attack during production--a setback that threatened to bring the entire project to its knees, before his ambitious daughter filled in for her father, for three short days, before DeMille returned to navigate THE TEN COMMANDMENTS to its historical conclusion. This is favorable stuff, and Orrison furnishes miniature details of unprejudiced about everything in exciting fashion.

So, although Chuck and the gang no longer dominate ABC entertainment on Easter evenings, THE TEN COMMANDMENTS aloof dominates the hallowed tier of narrative lexicons. This movie, after some 50 years, continues to uplift and entertain; and this collector's edition, with its impartial take of the facts, merely enhances the viewing experience.

Rocketman, the hero of this 1949 Republic serial offering, was also known to movie (and later television) audiences as "Commando Cody" (in "Radar men from From the Moon" and the "Commando Cody" limited-run tele-serial), and as "Larry Martin" in the "Zombies of the Stratosphere" chapterplay, which featured a young Leonard Nimoy as a malevolent alien invader.

The "Commando Cody" moniker was the most utilized name for this character, but the new serial, "King of the Rocketmen", is universally recognized as the best presentation of this flying profitable hero(whom many "boomers" fondly bewitch as "passe bullethead". Befriend in the 1930's novelist Zane Grey created an action-adventure character, Sgt. Dave King of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and set aside him in a book titled

"King of the Royal Mounted". Republic Pictures bought the rights to this and turned this "King" into an salubrious serial feature starring Allen "Rocky" Lane. After this, Republic was off and running on a "King" binge that lasted for years. A hero who had the last name of King would pop up repeatedly in Republic serials. There was a "King of the Texas Rangers", a "King of the Forest Rangers", a "King of the Rocketmen", and so forth. In fact, Republic's very last serial was...what else? ..."King of the Carnival".

This one is likely the best of the lot. It is a film that the obsolete "Cover Thrills Illustrated" magazine, years ago, pronounced "The last immense serial to be made in Hollywood". There were some Beneficial ones after it, but most serial fans do deem this was the last Grand one.

The yarn concerns a scientific think-tank/research facility in California called "Science Associates" . This group does high level inventive research. One of the members, scientist Jeff King, has been working secretly on a flying suit,which consists of a metal helmet, a leather flight jacket, a rocket jet-pack for the encourage, and a control unit attached to the front of the jacket. With this suit on, Jeff can lift off and coast through the air like Captain Marvel or Superman (the fact that he has no wings to give him aerodynamic select is ignored, as is the fact that his unprotected lower help, buttocks, and legs would procure burned off by the rocket flames....hey! Its a kid serial!!!) .

Jeff has to produce a "mystery persona"...Rocketman...when Science Associates comes under assault by a mystery man called "Doctor Vulcan", who seems to be someone among their occupy group. Vulan sends out his henchmen to do contemptible deeds throughout the serial, and Jeff King thwarts them time and again. But Dr. Vulcan DOES collect the particular scheme he has been looking for...something that may let him "rule the world"...it is a "death ray" way that breaks down the atomic structure of anything it is aimed at. It is called the "Decimater". Vulcan and his chief henchman, Tony Dirkin, pick the Decimater to "Fisherman's Island", at the edge of the continental shelf, out from Recent York City. In a remote shack they snort the Decimater beam on co-ordinates designed to carve through the water of the North Atlantic and disrupt the "Amsterdam Fault" on the sea floor. This will gain a sizable tsunami that will wipe out NYC unless an grand ransome is paid.

The ransome is NOT paid and Vulcan goes to work with his death ray. Original York is in the throes of cataclysmic doom. But Rocketman discovers the villains' hideout and leads a flight of Army A-20 attack bombers to "well-kept their clock" and set the day.

The flying effects are pretty. Stuntman David Sharpe is up suspended on a wire rig for some matte-work flying scenes, but most of the aerial footage is done with a life-size dummy pulled along through the air on parallel wires through some California hills and canyons; the same technique obsolete when "Captain Marvel" flew a few years earlier. Some writers have claimed that this was an "oversized" dummy eight feet long. It wasn't. It was a LIFE size dummy (Republic wasn't going to beget a special space of oversized clothes for an oversized dummy...that wasn't economical in the least...and if republic was anything, it was ECONOMICAL!!) . The dummy represented a SIX-FOOT man. The eight-foot figure is arrived at when you realize the arms were extended out in front of the figure to report horizontal "flight". Arms on a male six-foot adult are approximately two feet long when extended, ergo, a LIFE-size manikin, with arms extended upwards (when vertical), would tape out at approximately eight feet from fingertips to toe-tips.

Wired up and shot by effects wizards Howard and Theodore Lydecker, the flying dummy was a peruse to notice. Extremely realistic for what it was. And the dummy shots, intercut with the take-off and landing stuntwork by David Sharpe, is truly awesome. The flying effects are powerful better than the CARTOON Superman flights of the movie serials, AND better than the pole-and-chest-plate matte shots of George Reeves "flying" in the Superman t.v. series.

One of the best action scenes in the film is a beautifully staged and edited sequence in the piquant last chapter. Ahead of the Army bomber flight, Rocketman dives on the hideout shack and takes on Dirkin and Vulcan in a exasperated fistfight. He wants the decimator shut down for clear.

The sequence begins with the dummy in a arrive vertical dive on the cabin, sailing down towards an begin window. The editor does a fleet gash as the dummy reaches the window and then Dave Sharpe (in the "stunt version of the flying suit), sails into the accurate site...coming DOWN...HEAD first...hits the floor, somersaults to his feet, and blasts into the baddies' stunt doubles with fists flying. Everything in this serial works, from the flying effects to the tidal wave stock footage from RKO's "Deluge", to the sizable photograpy and film editing, and to the outstanding stunt work by masters like David Sharpe, Tom Steele,and all the rest of "The Cousins", as Republic's stunt team was known.

This is a really, really delightful serial from the "golden age". Now we need two more to savor on DVD : "Perceive Smasher" (My beget well-liked for "greatest sound serial ever made"...sorry "Captain Marvel") and "The Masked Marvel", a superlative WWII counter-sabotage showcase for stunt ace Tom Steele. Let's hope we can ogle these soon!!!

KING OF THE ROCKET MEN is a very delightful serial and I'm gay it's coming to DVD at last.

By this slack in the serial game (1949), Republic Studios had a tendency to go through the motions, getting by on the reputation (and re-releases) of earlier, better serials and the studio's matchless stunt and special effects men. That changed in 1948, when Columbia released SUPERMAN, which - despite the fact that it was a disappointment on every level - became the biggest money-making serial ever made. Republic, which had perfected "flying human" special effects with their earlier serials DARKEST AFRICA (1936) and THE ADVENTURES OF CAPTAIN MARVEL (1941), concocted their fill airborne super-hero, Rocket Man, and bested the Man of Steel handily.

Tris Coffin, nobody's opinion of a magnificent, two-fisted hero (he specialized in playing weaselly henchmen or slick con-artists) is Jeff King, the guy in the rocket suit. He surprises all of us by being a very effective hero, not least of all because he suddenly loses the moustache and turns into ace stuntman Tom Steele whenever a fight breaks out.

Speaking of ace stuntmen, not only is Steele doubling for the leading man, he plays one (or more) of Vulcan's henchmen, and the gang of thugs includes Dale Van Sickel and Dave Sharpe, two of the studio's other estimable stuntmen, who do double (and sometimes triple) duty in the same scenes, doubling the heroes, themselves, and probably the cameramen and script girl. It's a delight to gape.

The site entails Rocket Man battling a mysterious archfiend named Dr. Vulcan, who's after a deathray that he plans to exhaust to blackmail the civilized world. Along the scheme, Current York City is destroyed by a tidal wave (via stock footage from the 1933 film DELUGE) but the mayor doesn't seem to mind very considerable. By the device, despite the serial's title, if you're expecting a scene in which hordes of flying rocketmen swoop down and proclaim Tris Coffin their leader, well, don't net your hopes up.

Rocket Man would return with a unusual identity in the serial sequels RADAR MEN FROM THE MOON and ZOMBIES OF THE STRATOSPHERE, and the faux serial COMMANDO CODY, SKY MARSHAL OF THE UNIVERSE. For more information, please visit www.inthebalcony.com.

The DVD of KING OF THE ROCKET MEN is quite nice, with a superior represent and astronomical, hiss-free sound. (You'll have to supply your fill hissing.)
